Plank Challenge (yoga mat)

Ready for another challenge?

In my opinion, a plank is the best exercise you can perform to strengthen your core. What exactly is your core? You hear the word a lot, right? We often think of abdominal muscles, but these muscles are not the only muscles that make up the "core". Your core muscles stabilize your spine and keep you upright, therefore your core is made up of many different muscles that attach to your spine, gluts (your behind) included, and abdominal muscles.

There are so many benefits to adding planks to your daily routine. Easing low back pain, strengthening deep core muscles while improving posture, and improving balance are just a few. So take on this challenge with me!

Here's how it goes down:

Start by getting down into the plank position. Get down on the floor onto your elbows and forearms. Raise your body up off the floor balancing only on your toes and elbows/forearms:

  • Ears in line with shoulder.

  • Elbows under shoulders.

  • Shoulders, hips & heels in line.

  • Squeeze backside without locking knees.

  • Pelvis in a neutral position.

  • Ankles at 90 degrees.

Hold this position for as long as possible, keeping proper form. Make it a goal to hold for 30 seconds. If 30 seconds is a challenge, try dropping down onto your knees instead of toes and build up strength from there.

Eventually work up to a one minute plank. Once you have this conquered, set your goals even higher and work up to a two minute plank.

For some, it may take a week to reach the goal of performing a two minute plank. For others, it may take a week to reach a thirty second plank. Regardless of where you are now, let's see how far you can go! What do you have to lose? I challenge you - see where this challenge takes you in the next 30 days! Don't forget to come back and leave your feedback below!

[I recommend performing this challenge 3-4 days per week to see results!]
